Over 99% of smart meters connected first time with a single installation visit to each home, using SmartReach’s long-range radio communications solution

Scottish trial targets hard-to-reach meters in densely populated urban areas in Glasgow as well as rural locations to simulate GB-wide rollout conditions

SmartReach, a collaboration of Arqiva, BT, BAE Systems Detica and Sensus, together with ScottishPower have successfully demonstrated the ability of long-range radio communications to connect to smart meters regardless of location.

ScottishPower has been able to connect over 99% of meters in the trial areas with a single installation visit to each home, using SmartReach’s long-range radio communications solution alone. What’s more this was achieved before network optimisation by SmartReach, which would further increase connection rates, and without the use of so-called “infill” or any other special communications solutions.

This trial purposely targeted meters in “hard to reach” locations, an important test given that alternative communications solutions may struggle to connect up to 20% of meters, which could impact over five million homes when GB-wide rollout gets underway.

This Scottish trial covers meters located outside and deep inside buildings, in basements and in flats across rural and dense urban areas. Lochwinnoch is only 20 miles from Glasgow but is the type of rural location that alternative communications networks find hard to reach. Densely populated Glasgow presents a different kind of communications challenge, with meters located deep inside buildings, including basements.

Andrew Ward, ScottishPower’s Operations Director, commented, “This highly successful trial with SmartReach has shown how almost all smart meters, even in hard to reach locations, can be successfully connected with a single installation visit using its long-range radio communications solution alone. If this were rolled out at scale it could provide a more convenient experience for millions of consumers and lower installation costs.”

For the trial, SmartReach is using Arqiva’s existing tower infrastructure, Sensus’ proven FlexNet smart metering communications solution and smart meters from EDMI. SmartReach is also running trials with other UK energy and water utility companies, successfully demonstrating the suitability of its long-range radio solution for dedicated smart metering communications.

Sean Weir, Programme Director for SmartReach, said, “Alternative communications networks have gaps in coverage in remote areas and can also find it hard to connect to meters in basement flats and cupboards under stairs, even in city centres. This trial with ScottishPower has demonstrated the strengths of SmartReach’s long-range radio solution to reach meters wherever they are, including in locations that other networks find difficult to reach.”

The technology behind SmartReach is widely deployed in the US, where more than twelve million smart meter and grid end points are connected to long-range radio based networks from Sensus. It has been proven to be suitable for meters situated in conventional locations as well as those located in hard to reach places such as meter pits, cellars and basements.

5,000-household smart meter trial in Scotland for “hard to reach” locations

New 18-month trial will see smart meters installed in up to 5,000 homes in both Glasgow and Lochwinnoch

Includes densely populated urban area as well as rural locations to simulate national roll-out conditions

Other communication solutions struggle to reach smart meters in up to 20% of indoor locations – including in rural areas and deep inside buildings in urban areas

SmartReach and ScottishPower to demonstrate the suitability of a long-range radio communications network for connecting smart electricity meters, wherever they are.

SmartReach, a collaboration of Arqiva, BT, BAE Systems Detica and Sensus, and ScottishPower have announced a new Smart Metering trial to 5,000 smart electricity meters in Scotland, including in “hard to reach” locations. It covers both a rural area around Lochwinnoch and the dense urban area of central Glasgow.

The SmartReach solution will be used to demonstrate the suitability of a single, long-range radio based communications network for communicating with electricity meters, wherever they are located. Lochwinnoch is only 20 miles from Glasgow but is the type of rural location that alternative communications networks find hard to reach. Densely populated Glasgow presents a different kind of communications challenge, with meters located deep inside buildings, including basements.

Andrew Ward, ScottishPower’s Operations Director, commented, “We are committed to delivering the same high quality smart metering services to our customers, whether they live in city centres or rural areas. It is therefore essential that the supporting communications technology is easy to install, reliable and always available. This trial of long-range radio with SmartReach will build on the positive experience of our trial in Ipswich to help us to understand how “hard to reach” locations can be accessed.”

Reaching meters GB-wide with a single communications technology means that the installation process can be simpler and less expensive, with far fewer repeat visits required. It also means that costly, alternative communications solutions can be avoided. For the trial, SmartReach is using Arqiva’s existing tower infrastructure, Sensus’ proven FlexNet smart metering communications solution and smart meters from EDMI. SmartReach has also been running trials with other UK utility companies to demonstrate the suitability of long-range radio for dedicated smart meter communications, for energy as well as for water networks.

Sean Weir, Programme Director for SmartReach, said: “Connecting to smart meters in homes all across Great Britain is essential to realise the anticipated benefits. Some communications networks have gaps in coverage for remote areas and can also find it hard to reach meters in cities when they are sited indoors in basements and cupboards under stairs. This trial will demonstrate the strengths of SmartReach’s long-range radio solution to reach meters in locations that some other networks find difficult to cover.”

The technology behind SmartReach is widely deployed in the US, where more than ten million smart meter and grid end points are connected to long-range radio based networks from Sensus. It has been proven to be suitable for meters situated in conventional locations as well as those located in hard to reach places such as meter pits, cellars and basements.

ScottishPower, SmartReach and Siemens in major smart metering trial

SmartReach, ScottishPower and Siemens demonstrate the suitability of a long-range radio communications network for connecting smart electricity meters

Trial to show how “right first time” communications can support faster and lower cost installation

18-month trial will see smart meters installed in up to 1,000 homes across the Ipswich area

SmartReach, a collaboration of Arqiva, BT, BAE Systems Detica and Sensus for smart metering communications in Great Britain, has announced a trial involving up to 1,000 smart electricity meters with ScottishPower and Siemens in the Ipswich area.

For the trial, SmartReach is using Arqiva’s existing tower infrastructure and Sensus’ proven FlexNet smart metering communications solution. Siemens – which already provides a managed metering service for ScottishPower – will coordinate, plan and manage the installation of smart electricity meters into all homes participating in the trial. Siemens will also provide data to ScottishPower on a range of metrics to assess the speed and success of installation, as well as ongoing performance for scheduled and on-demand meter reads.

The SmartReach solution will be used to demonstrate the suitability of a long-range radio based communications network for communicating with domestic electricity meters, wherever they are located. Reaching meters with a single communications technology means that the installation process can be simpler and less expensive, with minimal repeat visits required. It also means that costly, secondary communications solutions can be avoided. Importantly, the trial will help ScottishPower further develop its approach to providing a high-quality customer experience using smart metering.

Ensuring that utility companies can connect smart meters to the network first time, and that communication can be established with all meters, will be critical factors in successfully achieving the Government’s 2019 deadline for the deployment of smart energy meters to all homes and small company premises. SmartReach has also been running trials with other Utility Companies to demonstrate the suitability of long-range radio for dedicated smart meter communications, for energy as well as for water networks.

Widely deployed in the US, where more than ten million smart meter and grid end points are connected to long-range radio based networks from Sensus, the technology has been shown to be suitable for meters situated in conventional locations as well as those located in hard-to-reach locations such as meter pits, cellars and basements.

Andrew Ward, ScottishPower’s Operations Director, commented, “Smart meters will help our customers to reduce their energy consumption, as well as helping us to provide improved services. To ensure the best experience for customers, it is important that installation is easy and that smart metering communications work reliably from the time each meter is installed. This trial will help us to evaluate the potential of long-range radio to reach meters wherever they are located, with the goal of achieving high first time connection rates and ongoing high levels of reliability”.

David Green, Business Development Director for SmartReach, said: “We are delighted to be working with ScottishPower and Siemens on this smart metering trial. It will demonstrate the strengths of the SmartReach long-range radio based solution to reach meters wherever they are located. This builds on other trials we are running to show the benefits of our solution for smart electricity meters and grids as well as for smart water meters.”

Kevin Tutton, UK Director, Siemens Metering Communications & Services added, “As a trusted partner of ScottishPower, Siemens already provides Gas Prepayment, meter operator and data retrieval services. We are delighted to extend this to support ScottishPower as they transition from traditional to smart metering services, through the trial of essential smart metering communication technology.”

SmartReach and Thames Water demonstrate the suitability of a long‐range radio communications network for connecting smart water meters

Project shows how smart water metering can help water companies to better manage their networks, reduce leaks and conserve water

SmartReach, a collaboration of Arqiva, BT, BAE Systems Detica and Sensus for smart metering communications in Great Britain, has announced the extension of its smart meter and smart grid trial in the Reading area to include London.

The SmartReach solution has been used in the Reading trial to demonstrate the suitability of a long‐range radio based communications network for communicating with water meters. This extension to the trial will enable Thames Water and SmartReach to assess the performance of the communications system from locations with different housing stock and difficult to reach, underground meter locations.

Ensuring that the utility companies can connect smart meters to the network first time, and that communication can be established with all meters, will be critical factors in successfully achieving the Government’s 2019 deadline for the deployment of smart energy meters to all homes and small premises. SmartReach has been running trials with Scottish Power, SSE and Thames Water to demonstrate the suitability of long‐range radio for dedicated smart meter communications, for energy as well as for water networks.

While the installation of smart water meters has not been mandated by UK government, the trial with Thames Water will enable the benefits such a system could provide to the operation of a water network to be evaluated. Widely deployed in the US, where more than 9 million smart meter and grid end points are connected to long‐range radio based networks from Sensus, the technology has been shown to be suitable for meters located in hard‐to‐reach locations such as meter pits, cellars and basements.

Dr Piers Clark, commercial director at Thames Water, said: “As water becomes an increasingly precious resource, smart water metering will play a critical role in helping the water industry to better manage consumption and leakage. Based on the current trial with SmartReach in Reading, we believe that long‐range radio offers a simple, quick, non‐obtrusive and efficient means of building a Smart Water Meter network. The system promises far more available data on water flows that will help Thames Water to manage consumer demand and pinpoint leakages. Extending the scope of the trial to London will provide further valuable data.”

David Green, smart metering sales director for Arqiva, said: “We are delighted to extend the smart metering trial with Thames Water. It is demonstrating the importance of smart meters to the water industry and proving the suitability of Long‐Range Radio as a communications solution for smart water, smart meters and smart grids.”

Information on Thames Water

Thames Water, which serves London and the Thames Valley, is Britain’s biggest water and sewerage company. Top‐quality drinking water: We supply more than a tonne a week of water on average to each of our 8.7m of our drinking water customers. That’s 2,600m litres a day. Recycling water back to the environment: We also recycle safely back to the environment 13.8m people’s wastewater. That’s 2,800m litres of sewage a day – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our region: Our service area stretches from eastern fringes of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire in the west, through to the western edges of Essex and Kent in the east. Bills: Our bills are among the lowest in the UK water sector, with the average household bill currently 93p a day per household for water and sewerage services. Regulators: All water firms in England and Wales are privately‐owned and answerable to our regulators, who monitor all our activities.
